Have a go at

Working co-operatively for example

  • Animal jigsaws (Primary Values)
  • Folding a piece of paper (one hand behind back)
  • Big feeding spoons
  • Co-operation donkeys (place in order, retell the story, think of alternatives)

Including some ‘warm up’ activities

Mirror Games: in pairs take turns to mirror each others movements, start off slowly.

Zoom eek – with hands together, children pass the word ‘zoom’ all around the circle. Encourage eye contact with shoulder partners. Now, introduce the word ‘eek’, this bounces the ‘zoom’ in the reverse direction. A new game can be played once the zoom has passed all the way round this ensures that everyone works together and gets a turn.

Blast off! children count down from the total number present. Each child can say only one number. Everyone has to say a number to reach ‘one’. When this happens, all call ‘Blast Off!’ They can call out at random, but must not call at the same time. If they do, they have to start again.

Find the Treasure: one volunteer leaves the room. Hide the treasure, re-enter the room, the rest of the group works together to clap (loud - soft) or smile (narrow - broad) to indicate where the treasure is.

Watching an argument/heated discussion

Between two people( watch a soap – C. Street/Neighbours etc..) watch out for

  • Body language
  • Eye contact
  • Listening/speaking patterns
  • Evidence of turn taking

Talk about the things that do not promote active listening and achieving a win-win solution.

Playing ‘Sarah Says’

This is a noncompetitive adaptation of ‘Simon Says’. Begin two games simultaneously, each with it’s own leader. If a child carries out an instruction that has not been preceded with ‘Sarah Says’ , that child transfers to the second game and joins in. there is no elimination, only movement back and forward between two parallel games.
