Facial expression and gesture: using extract from Our Day Out

Learning intentions

  • We are learning to explore how attitudes are conveyed through gesture and facial expression.

What to look for

  • Pupils participating in waxworks
  • Pupils preparing two tableaux
  • Pupils using appropriate expressions
  • Pupils using suitable gestures
  • Pupils agreeing roles within the group

Learning activities

Pupils move around the room and pose as a waxwork (freezing in role). Suggest or elicit their ideas for a range of roles, for example:

  • a P1 pupil;
  • a Year 8 pupil;
  • a Year 14 pupil;
  • a teacher; or
  • a bank employee.

Put the pupils into pairs and ask them to create a tableau of a P1 pupil and the teacher. Then work together to discuss how the relationship is communicated through each tableau.

Provide copies of the relevant extract of the script of Our Day Out for pupils to read through in groups of six.

Ask them to choose two different parts of the script which explore attitudes, and create two different tableaux to demonstrate them.

Elicit feedback from the pupils (two stars and a wish) on the tableaux.
