Characterisation and hot-seating: using extract from Grease

Learning intentions

  • We are learning to develop character through the use of hot seating.

What to look for

  • Pupils reading a script
  • Pupils using hot seating
  • Pupils creating a convincing role

Learning activities

Divide the class into groups of five. Give them an extract from Grease to read.

Ask them to discuss the presentation of the characters in their extract. In the course of this discussion, encourage them to:

  • ask focused questions;
  • listen actively and share their opinions;
  • distribute roles and reread the script aloud for meaning and sense;
  • act out the scene and freeze at certain moments to allow hot seating to occur;
  • discuss responses in order to further continue the drama; and/or
  • evaluate how hot seating has helped them to adopt a role.
