Thoughts, ideas and feelings

Learning intentions

  • We are learning to express thoughts and ideas to the whole class.

What to look for

  • Pupils suggesting and discussing ideas within whole class and small group situations
  • Pupils discussing and agreeing on the format for improvisation
  • Pupils agreeing roles and responsibilities within small groups
  • Pupils confidently re-enacting scenarios and showing some sense of audience
  • Pupils discussing and reflecting on the performances of their own and other groups

Learning activities

Start a discussion by asking a number of questions about a story or scenario, for example:

  • Why was Humpty Dumpty sitting on the wall?
  • Was he sunbathing?
  • Was he fishing?
  • What made Humpty Dumpty fall off the wall?
  • Were there boys playing football behind the wall?
  • What happened next?

Organise the pupils into small groups. Ask them to improvise possible scenarios that they have discussed.

Give an opportunity for each group to perform one of their Humpty Dumpty scenarios for the rest of the class. Provide support.

Lead a whole class discussion about the groups’ performance.
