Emotions and feelings

Learning intentions

  • We are learning to recognise a variety of emotions.
  • We are learning to express different feelings.
  • We are learning to express their own feelings.

What to look for

  • Pupils responding appropriately to a range of emotive situations through discussion and gesture
  • Pupils beginning to select appropriate resources confidently in response to stimuli in order to express specific emotions
  • Pupils responding to a range of situations in ways which demonstrate personal strategies for dealing with and understanding their emotions

Learning activities

Show pictures that illustrate different emotions.

Ask the pupils to select an appropriate puppet or mask to demonstrate a particular emotion, for example:

  • happy;
  • sad;
  • angry; or
  • frightened.

Tell Mr Men stories to the class. Encourage them to respond with appropriate facial expressions, for example smiling to portray Mr Happy.

Organise the pupils into small groups. Ask them to portray other Mr Men characters and then perform for the rest of the class.

Use stories with an emphasis on PDMU (Personal Development and Mutual Understanding) to enable the pupils to identify and express how they are feeling, for example:

  • Owl Babies;
  • Not Now Bernard; or
  • Dogger.

Ask them to demonstrate how they would feel in particular scenarios.
