About this resource

For each subject area and each Key Stage, there are suggestions about what pupils should be learning in The Arts. These include lots of practical examples of classroom activities that you might find useful, as well as tips for what to look for in pupils’ work. Where possible, we’ve illustrated activities with videos and photos. These visuals enable you to see and appreciate the type of work your pupils can aim to produce.

Overall, the content is set out to help you in terms of:

  • learning intentions;
  • relevant learning and teaching activities;
  • what to expect from pupils; and
  • opportunities to monitor, evaluate and review progress.

You might find these features helpful as a starting point for preparing your Arts lessons. Of course, all the suggestions put forward here are non-statutory: you are free to adapt, modify or replace them to suit your own learners and your programme of study.

As you navigate through the site, we recommend that you explore the links to other Key Stages as well as your own. That way, you will:

  • be able to make connections between pupils’ learning experiences at each stage;
  • know what your pupils should already have learned in other classes; and
  • be well equipped to guide them toward further progress.

You can use this knowledge to help plan and prepare your lessons so that you can be confident you are enabling your learners to enjoy real and relevant curricular experiences in The Arts.
