Using InCAS: Key Steps

Step 1: Moving pupil data from SIMS into InCAS and creating the statutory assessments for the school

Please note that this process should be completed only once in each school.

  • Step-by-step tutorials and downloadable instructions for this process are available behind the Preparation tab above; and
  • Instructions are also available in the document ‘School Preparation Required and Support Available’ which was enclosed with the ‘InCAS assessments - school preparation and support letter’ received by principals in August 2009.

Step 2: Completing statutory assessments

Please note that Reading will take no longer than 30 minutes and General Maths 25 minutes to complete. These must be completed by pupils in Year 4-7 during the autumn term.

  • Show the Inky Pupil Demo (see Useful Links) to your pupils on an interactive white board or via a data projector before they complete their Reading and General Maths InCAS; and
  • Instructions are also available on page 23 of the ‘2009 - Information for Teachers: InCAS and Annual Report’ manual.

Step 3: Sending assessments for marking

Please note that teachers should ideally wait until all of their pupils have completed the assessments so that they only complete this process once. You will not lose any pupil data by waiting for all your assessments to be completed.

  • Step-by-step tutorials and downloadable instructions are available behind the Sending Assessments for Marking tab above; and
  • Instructions are also available on page 24 of the ‘2009 - Information for Teachers: InCAS and Annual Report’ manual.

Step 4: Accessing and understanding feedback

Please note that once you have uploaded your assessments you should allow 24-48 hours before logging on to the InCAS + website to download the results.

  • Refer to the Accessing Feedback and Understanding Feedback area of this website (see Useful Links); and
  • Instructions are also available on page 27 and 31-38 of the ‘2009 - Information for Teachers: InCAS and Annual Report’ manual.

Step 5: Using InCAS to inform learning and teaching

Please note that it is important to look at your class results alongside the observations and assessments that you have already made and the information provided by the previous teacher.

CEM have produced booklets ‘Diagnosing and Remediating Literacy Problems: Using InCAS Software’ and ‘Diagnosing and Remediating Mathematical Difficulties: Using InCAS Software’ which you may find helpful.

  • Copies of these booklets are available in the download section of this page.

Optional Step: Using the optional assessments

Please note that the optional assessments can be completed at any time during the school year if teachers wish to do so. They can be set up at pupil or class level.

  • Step-by-step tutorials and downloadable instructions are available behind the Assessing Pupils tab above; and
  • Instructions are also available on pages 24 of the ‘2009 - Information for Teachers: InCAS and Annual Report’ manual.
