Information for Pupils
Before they sit InCAS it is important that pupils not only understand what they need to do but also why they are sitting the assessments in the first place. That is why it is vital that tachers are familiar with all the relevant information.
Teachers should explain to pupils that:
- InCAS Reading will look at their ability to recognise words, to break them into sounds and to choose the appropriate words to complete a comprehension passage. Some pupils will see a second passage – it doesn’t matter if they don’t finish all of the questions in their 2nd passage as this does not affect their outcomes;
- InCAS General Maths may present them with questions about number work, shapes, measuring and reading graphs and charts;
- they should not worry about the assessments but should try their best and enjoy working on the computer; and
- they will discuss how the pupils have done with their parents or guardians at a parent meeting, to plan how best to work together to help them learn and enjoy their time in school.
Inky Pupil Demos
Teachers can use the Inky Pupil Demo to introduce pupils to InCAS assessments. Inky is an animated character who will show them how to log on and work their way through their assessments. English and Irish versions are available.
These pupil demos are designed to be shown to and discussed with a whole class and each includes a final section called ‘Inky’s Reminders’ which summarises the instructions and can be moved through at the speed that teachers feel to be appropriate for their pupils.
These demos are best viewed on a whiteboard or via a data projector. For younger pupils or for those who have special educational needs it may be helpful for them to watch the demo several times.
The demos are not designed to be watched individually by pupils without interaction with their teacher or classroom assistant.
