Computer-Based Assessment in Primary Schools

2011-2012

In the autumn term of 2011, InCAS will continue to be the computer-based assessment that primary schools in Northern Ireland are required by the Department of Education (DENI) to complete with all Year 4, 5, 6 and 7 pupils. Schools are also required to report the outcomes to parents as outlined in the DENI Circular 2011/15, issued on 30 August 2011.

However, the contract with CEM (University of Durham) for provision of the InCAS assessments is due to end in January 2012.

2012-2013

Following a public procurement process the Department of Education has identified two new providers for the Literacy and Numeracy computer-based assessments, as follows:

  • Tribal Education Ltd. for the Literacy assessment; and
  • Rising Stars UK Ltd. for the Numeracy assessment.

The Department of Education and CCEA recognise the challenges that schools face this year, particularly in relation to preparation for the changes to statutory assessment requirements in 2012/13.

More detailed communication with schools will follow shortly to assist with planning and implementation.

This will include arrangements for:

  • trialling and evaluation of the new assessments prior to implementation;
  • Principals’ Information Sessions;
  • online training for Year 4-7 teachers; and
  • arrangements for computer-based assessment in 2012.

In addition, a Computer-Based Assessment Helpdesk facility will continue to be available in CCEA on 028 90261274 to support schools and to answer any queries arising.
