Key Stage 3 Annual Report

From 2008/09, the annual report will be the statutory means for reporting to parents for Year 8 and 9 pupils. By 2010 the report will be used for all pupils in Key Stage 3.

The report will reflect the Northern Ireland Curriculum and Assessment Arrangements and should be underpinned by a formative record of pupil progress and achievement and used to improve pupil progress.

Exemplar Annual Report

To assist with planning for reporting on the Northern Ireland Curriculum, exemplar formats are available for discussion and use within your school. The exemplars illustrate possible approaches to reporting within a revised Northern Ireland Curriculum context and reflect the statutory requirements for assessment.

In each exemplar, reporting takes place in the following areas:

  • Areas of Learning (including Learning for Life and Work);
  • Cross-Curricular Skills (Communication, Using Mathematics and Using ICT); and
  • Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities.

Exemplar 1

Exemplar 1DOC, 68 KB

This format of the annual report includes comments on each of the nine Areas of Learning, and requires comments for the Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities to be infused into subject statements as appropriate. A discrete section for comments on the cross-curricular skills is also included.

Exemplar 2

Exemplar 2DOC, 69 KB

This format demonstrates one way in which schools might adapt and add to the annual report by providing additional quantitative information, such as attainment grades, to reflect the school’s own assessment and reporting policy. The template allows for additional columns and rows to be added as required.

Exemplar 3

Exemplar 3DOC, 69 KB

This format includes a Pupil Comment to provide an opportunity for the pupil voice in their annual report. This process might be supported by the Progress File to help produce a pupil personal statement. The template allows for additional rows and columns to be added as required.
