Areas of Learning at Key Stage 3

The curriculum for Key Stage 3 is set out in nine Areas of Learning comprised of subject strands. Each subject strand is defined as a minimum requirement and is structured to facilitate more collaborative learning. Although subject strands are organised within specified Areas of Learning this does not preclude connections being made with other Areas of Learning or subject strands.

Language and Literacy

Including subject strands of English, Irish (in Irish speaking schools) and Media Education.

Mathematics
& Numeracy

Including Mathematics and Financial Capability.

Modern Languages

Including any official language of the European Union (other than English and, in IM schools, Irish).

The Arts

Including the subject strands of Art and Design, Music and Drama;

Environment
& Society

Including subject strands of Geography and History.

Science
& Technology

Including subject strands of Science, and Technology and Design;

Learning for
Life & Work

Including the subject strands of Personal Development, Home Economics, Local and Global Citizenship and Employability.
