Activity Ideas

You can use the ideas below or allow your pupils to adapt them when they plan their Olympic and Paralympic Celebration event. You may wish to develop some of the classroom activities to form part of the celebration.

Carry the Torch

Ask your pupils to plan a torch relay around the school or their local area, on the day of, or leading up to, their own Olympic and Paralympic event. Invite them to vote for inspirational people, in the school or local community, to become the torchbearers. See the right-hand column for links to simple designs for an Olympic Torch.

Assemblies

Throughout the classroom activities, give your pupils an opportunity to find information about the Olympic and Paralympic Games. They could make a presentation about everything they have learned throughout the unit for an assembly about Rio 2016. You can find more Olympic and Paralympic assembly ideas on the BBC World Class website.

An Olympic and Paralympic Sports Day

Throughout the classroom activities, give your pupils an opportunity to find information about the Olympic and Paralympic Games. They could make a presentation about everything they have learned throughout the unit for an assembly about Rio 2016. You can find more Olympic and Paralympic assembly ideas on the London 2012 website.

Awards Ceremony

Encourage your pupils to design and make their own medals, flags and olive wreaths for an awards ceremony for winners in sporting activities in the school sports day. You could also present awards to pupils who have demonstrated one or more of the Olympic and Paralympic values. Ask your pupils to nominate winners of the Olympic and Paralympic values awards. You can find more information on the Olympic and Paralympic values in the Olympic and Paralympic Values classroom activity.
