Growing Up in Northern Ireland
Key Element: Citizenship
Year 10
This theme provides opportunities for pupils to explore some issues for young people growing up in Northern Ireland today. Pupils will develop a deeper understanding of how the past has influenced our society. They will also consider how they can play their part in shaping the future of Northern Ireland and the communities to which they belong. A variety of learning methodologies are provided to support relationship building with peers as well as encouraging their development as independent learners through individual activities.
Citizenship as a Key Element
Citizenship develops the capacity of young people to participate positively and effectively in society. This Key Element increases their ability to make informed and responsible decisions as citizens throughout their lives. Citizenship also seeks to foster in pupils a sense of belonging to various types of community, an appreciation that they can contribute to changing and improving their communities and a greater awareness of their ability to influence the democratic process.
Young people are encouraged to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the extent of diversity and change within society whilst challenging and extending their perception of themselves and others.
Opportunities to focus on this Key Element across the curriculum should help pupils to:
- respect the equal rights of others;
- recognise the interdependence of people, communities and the environment;
- negotiate and compromise;
- influence change;
- contribute to the welfare of the school, the community and the environment.
